Resin infiltration held the shade in 96.2% of MIH incisors after two years
Two-year follow-up of 106 permanent incisors with MIH showed clinical success of 96.2% by shade match, with hypersensitivity falling from 8 to 0 on a scale of 0 to 10.

A retrospective observational study published in Acta Stomatologica Croatica followed 106 permanent incisors affected by molar incisor hypomineralisation (MIH) in children aged 7 to 10, treated at a university paediatric dentistry clinic. Demarcated opacities were treated by resin infiltration, and findings were recorded three times: one month, one year and two years after the procedure.
The primary outcome was aesthetic integration measured by shade match under the FDI criteria. After two years, clinical success was 96.2%. All assessed aesthetic and biological items of the FDI index likewise exceeded 90% success.
The most marked change was in hypersensitivity, which patients rated themselves on a scale of 0 to 10: from an initial 8 the value fell to 0 after 24 months.
Satisfaction of patients and carers was high after one month and after one year, but fell after two years, particularly with yellow-brown demarcated opacities. That gap between the objective measure and the subjective impression is the most useful part of the finding for everyday work: with darker, yellow-brown opacities, expectations should be set in advance.
Limitations
This is a retrospective observational study carried out in a single university clinic; no comparison group is described in the abstract, and the unit of analysis is the tooth (106), not the patient. Funding data are not stated.
For the practice
- With light demarcated opacities on incisors, resin infiltration is a reasonable option before preparation: the two-year data support the durability of the achieved shade.
- With yellow-brown opacities, photograph the situation before the procedure and explain to the parent that complete masking is not expected; that is exactly where satisfaction fell after two years.
- Record hypersensitivity on a 0 to 10 scale before the procedure and at every review. It is the outcome the child and the parent recognise fastest, and in this study it disappeared completely.
